The chocolate tour with kids

Children are welcome on the Princeville garden and chocolate tour, but three hours of walking and plant stories suit some ages better than others. Here is what to know before you book for the family.

The Viator listing sells adult tickets from age 14 and a child rate for ages 2 to 13, and infants sit on laps. The gardens add two caveats: they suggest about 5 as the age at which children enjoy the tour, and parents must keep children with them at all times.

The quick answer

Children 2 to 13 pay a child rate on Viator, and 14-year-olds pay the adult price. Booked direct, children 3 to 13 are $55 and 2 and under are free. The gardens suggest about age 5 and up, strollers are impractical on the stairs and gravel, and parents must keep children with them. Lydgate Farms only takes ages 9 and up.

Can children do the chocolate tour?

Yes: children from 2 book at a child rate on Viator and infants sit on laps, though the gardens suggest about 5 and up for kids to enjoy it.

The gardens also ask parents to make "an honest assessment" of their children's temperament, out of consideration for the other guests. It is a three-hour guided walk with a lot of listening, in a group of up to 17.

What is the best age for the tour?

About 5 and up, which is the age the gardens themselves suggest.

Younger children can come, but three hours on stairs and gravel with a seated break is a lot for toddlers. Guests who brought children describe it as fun for the whole family when the kids are old enough to enjoy tasting fruit and spotting pods.

Can you bring a stroller?

It is not practical: the route has several sets of stairs, loose gravel slopes and a cable bridge.

The tour is not wheelchair accessible and does not allow walkers or scooters. A baby carrier works far better for infants, and closed shoes with grip matter for children too. See what to wear on the garden tour for the kit list.

What will kids enjoy most?

The tasting stops: seasonal fruit, the garden's honey and the chocolate break, plus cacao pods on the trees and the cable bridge.

The chocolate is mostly single-origin bars, some of them dark, so expect children to like some pieces more than others. The mosquitoes are the other thing to plan for: use the DEET-free spray at check-in.

Can children go to Lydgate Farms?

Only from age 9: Lydgate Farms does not allow children under 9, including infants in carriers, on the farm tour.

For families with younger children, Lydgate points to its chocolate tasting room in downtown Kapaa, open Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM. With children 9 and over who love chocolate, the farm is the bigger chocolate experience.

Which Kauai tasting tours work with a stroller?

The Hanalei food walk, the Moloa'a fruit farm and the private food tour are all listed as stroller accessible.

The Hanalei walk is on flat town pavements and caps groups at 12; call the operator ahead if you are bringing an infant. The fruit farm has a child rate for ages 3 to 12 and a separate infant band. The private food tour lets infants sit on laps, but its child rate applies only with two paying adults.

On Maui, guests also need to climb about 24 broad stairs with a railing and walk for about 20 minutes. None of the three is wheelchair accessible.
